I Googled It For You

The simple system

Use a room code, box number, and unpacking priority.

KIT-03

Room and number

KIT means kitchen; 03 is the third kitchen box. Use the same code on the inventory sheet.

OPEN 1

Unpack priority

Use OPEN 1 for first-night needs, then OPEN 2 for the next group. Everything else can wait.

DISHES · FRAGILE

Contents and caution

Write the main contents and mark fragile, heavy, upright, or do-not-stack items clearly.

Label every side that matters

What to put on each box.

  1. 1. Destination: use a room name or code such as KITCHEN, BED 1, BATH, OFFICE, or GARAGE.
  2. 2. Box number: number boxes within each room, such as K-01, K-02, and K-03. Avoid one giant house-wide numbering system unless the inventory is very detailed.
  3. 3. Short contents: write useful nouns such as “pots and pans” or “coffee supplies,” not just “kitchen.”
  4. 4. Priority: mark OPEN 1, OPEN 2, or STORE. Keep the first-night group small enough to unpack.
  5. 5. Handling notes: mark FRAGILE, HEAVY, THIS SIDE UP, or DO NOT STACK when the contents require it.

Make the system visible

Color helps, but words are more reliable.

Colored tape or large colored labels can help movers and family members spot the destination quickly. Assign one color per room, but always write the room name too. Tape can fall off, lighting can be poor, and a color can be hard to distinguish.

Put the main destination label on at least two sides of the box so it can be read when boxes are stacked. Keep labels away from seams, handles, or surfaces that may tear.

For boxes containing valuables, medication, personal documents, or sensitive information, use a discreet code and keep those items with you instead of relying on an outside label.

Protect the first night

Build a small “open first” group.

Do not make every box urgent. Put the essentials in clearly marked bags or boxes that stay accessible and travel with you when possible.

First night

Toiletries, medication, chargers, pajamas, towels, basic dishes, and a change of clothes.

First morning

Coffee or breakfast items, pet supplies, school or work needs, and basic cleaning supplies.

Important papers

Identification, contracts, keys, records, medications, and valuables stay with you.

Tool box

Scissors, box cutter, tape, screwdriver, phone charger, light bulbs, and a small trash bag.
