Waste is part of the plan, not a secret extra.

Waste accounts for cuts, spills, uneven surfaces, damaged pieces, mixing loss, compaction, touch-ups, and the small amount that cannot be used efficiently. The right allowance depends on the material and the project.

The planner first calculates the amount the measured space needs. It then multiplies that amount by 1 + the waste percentage. For 10% waste, that is 1.10. Only after that step does it round up to whole cans, bags, or tons.

Example: if a project needs 8.2 bags before waste, a 10% allowance makes 9.02 bags. You cannot buy 0.02 of a bag, so the shopping list rounds up to 10 bags. Check the product label and supplier guidance when the job, surface, or material makes the default allowance unsuitable.

Use the product’s numbers

Coverage, bag yield, and gravel density vary. Replace the defaults with the value on the product label or supplier specification whenever you have it.

Safety boundary: this planner estimates quantities and shopping costs. It does not determine structural thickness, base preparation, reinforcement, drainage, electrical safety, permits, or local code requirements. Follow instructions and ask a qualified professional when those decisions matter.
